Welcome to our 2nd Grade blog! This site will give you a peek in to our classroom to see all of the learning we will be doing this year! Please read the blog guidlines with your child under the parent page at the top! I am looking forward to a wonderful year with you all!
January was a crazy month. We came back from a long, warm break to holidays, blizzards, and the 100th day of school! However, we did squeeze some learning in! We learned about the “Sky at Night” this month and got to learn the phases of the moon. Listen to our “Moon Phase” rap by Mr. Lee on YouTube. We also went to the “space motel” Colburn Museum planetarium, where we pretended to be astronauts and astronomers. The 100th day of school was awesome! We made 100 day glasses, chex mix, counted to 100 using 2s, 5s, and 10s. We added $1.00 to our money chart since it makes 100 cents. The students LOVED that! We also worked on our NNCW lessons, however, our presentation got postponed until February since the Jonas blizzard hit Asheville with over a foot! WOW!
November and December were very busy months for first grade! We did a lot of learning and a lot of big projects.
November we finished up our rock Science unit and went to Elijah Gem Mine to dig/sift through dirt! The kids enjoyed that very much! We met our WCU pen pals and took a trip to the campus. We ate lunch in the dining hall, played on the football field, and learned some math from future teachers! We had a very successful Shadow’s cafe that raised $1,000 for our PTO! We even registered to vote and voted in our school-wide election!
December we studied holidays. We learned about Diwali, Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, St. Lucia Day, Carols by Candlelight, and Las Posadas. I wish I had gotten more pictures of the holiday learning! But, I was busy teaching! They tried new foods, made crafts, and even made a Prezi presentation to share with K-4! I was so proud of their hard work!
Check out some of the pictures from the past 2 months!
We were busy in October!! We celebrated Indigenous People’s Day in Cherokee with the whole school, went to the Orange Peel to see Preservation Hall Jazz Band, learned about soils, partnered with Buncombe County Soil and Water, registered to vote, and more!! Check out some pictures from October’s happenings!
September was an awesome month in first grade. We studied plants, plant needs, learned about apples, took a trip to the apple orchard! Learned about Rosh Hashanah- Thank you Ms. Miri! We ratified our constitution and worked on story addition problems. Here’s a few pictures from our Rosh Hashanah presentation and our Skytop field trip.
We had our first Science lab Friday on germs!! We tested hand sanitize and good hand-washing to see which one did a better job of killing the germs on our hands. We found that hand sanitize does a great job, but hand-washing got rid of more germs! Ask your child about our “germs”! We used lotion to act as the germs inside- and glitter for the germs outside- to make it stick to our hands! We learned that germs are everywhere!
We had such a wonderful first two days of school. We read some great books, made “Jitter Juice”, used our Recipe for Success to make a gluten-free chex mix, and we learned that our teachers will be fair, but fair looks different sometimes. We painted rocks to remind us that there’s only ONE YOU (Read the book) and we need to make this place a better place! The kids ooze sweetness and I can’t wait to spend the next 183 days with them!
